Its psychoactive ingredient is also believed to be present in many foods and plants. Ephedra is also known to be used in traditional Chinese medicine, where did steroids originate. Prednisone & Weight Gain (The Studies) Many studies have been conducted to evaluate the side effect profile of prednisone and similar corticosteroid medications(such as prednisone, prednisolone, prednisolone sulfate, prednisolone acetate) used by professional athletes to aid in weight management. Several studies indicate that high doses of prednisone can lead to significant weight gain and to an increased risk of type II diabetes for those prednisolone users, especially if they take prednisolone in a combined medication. This problem is due to the fact that the glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) has been known to inhibit insulin secretion and that these drugs act on the central nervous system to induce these glucose dependent and glucose intolerant side effects and weight gain. These side effects are related to impaired adipogenesis and lipid oxidation through increased lipolysis (fatty acid oxidation) and increased synthesis of fatty acids into adipokines. A few studies using smaller doses of glucuronidated prednisone (2,500mg) with and without insulin (0.1 to 0.5mg/kg) noted a significant increase in fat oxidation and increased fat synthesis when tested at 20 minutes post treatment to 0.2g of prednisone and insulin, respectively. The side effect profile of prednisone in these studies has been noted to be dose dependent with higher dosages having a greater incidence of these adverse effects than those having lower doses. The most common adverse effect seen with higher dosages of prednisone is weight gain, which has been linked to a higher risk of type II diabetes. It appears that the dose-dependent increase in weight gain is secondary to increased fat synthesis rather than an actual increase in fat mass which is seen with lower doses of prednisone 5.3. Weight Loss The combination of prednisone & β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate with L-carnitine (L-carnitine methyl ester (CME)) has been found to be effective when given 2 hours prior to an exercise trial and was able to reduce fat mass gains by 26 ± 3g (-22 and -10% bodyweight for men and women, respectively) with no difference in overall body fat increase at 2 hours.
